Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Transfer Your VHS Tapes

If you have a box of old VHS tapes sitting in a closet, attic, or basement, you’re not alone. Nearly every family I work with here in South Jersey has the same story:

“We’ve been meaning to get to these for years.”

The truth is — videotapes were never meant to last forever.

Magnetic Tape Breaks Down

VHS tapes rely on magnetic particles bonded to plastic film. Over time, that bond weakens. The result?

  • Faded color
  • Audio dropouts
  • Flickering picture
  • Complete tape failure

Once the magnetic layer begins separating, there is no repair.

Mold Is a Silent Destroyer

Basements and garages are the worst place for old tapes. Moisture creates mold. And mold doesn’t just ruin one tape — it can contaminate an entire collection.

I’ve seen wedding videos permanently destroyed because of storage conditions.

Playback Machines Are Disappearing

Even if your tapes survive… VCRs won’t.

Replacement parts are no longer manufactured. Working machines are becoming rare. When they fail, so does access to your memories.

Time Is Not on Your Side

Every year that passes increases the risk. What plays today may not play next year.
And these aren’t just tapes.

They are:

  • First birthdays
  • Wedding vows
  • Parents’ voices
  • Grandparents laughing
  • Kids who are now grown

Once they’re gone, they’re gone.

Preserve Them While You Still Can

At Tommy Productions, I personally handle every tape that comes through the door. I’ve been preserving memories since 1985, and I treat every box as if it were my own family’s history.

If you’ve been thinking about transferring your tapes — don’t wait for the “right time.”

The right time is before they stop working.
